USB drives and copying movies to a Meta Quest
A Meta Quest can read a USB-C flash drive or portable SSD: plug it into the headset's USB-C port and open it in Meta's Files app or in a video player. Format it as exFAT, because FAT32 cannot store a file larger than 4 GB. To copy movies onto the headset instead, connect it to a Windows PC, Mac or Chromebook with a USB-C cable that carries data, then select Allow in the headset.
Drive or copy?
| Method | Headset storage used | Needs a computer | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB-C drive plugged in | None | Only to fill the drive | Big libraries, swapping films often |
| Copy over the cable | Yes | Yes, each time | A few films for a trip |
| Network share or Plex | None | A NAS, PC or server at home | Watching at home, nothing to carry |
Meta's Store also lists file manager apps, such as AnExplorer and QuestFiles, that move files over Wi-Fi. For streaming from home instead of copying, see NAS and PC videos.
Which drive to use
A USB-C flash drive is the simplest: it plugs straight into the headset. A drive with a USB-A plug needs a small USB-C adapter. A portable SSD is a good choice for a big library.
The Meta Quest 2, 3 and 3S have a single USB-C port, so the drive and the charging cable compete for it. Charge before a long film, and keep in mind that the drive draws a little power from the headset battery. A portable hard disk with spinning platters asks for more power than a flash drive or an SSD.
exFAT, FAT32 or NTFS
| File system | Largest file | Verdict for a Meta Quest |
|---|---|---|
| exFAT | No practical limit | Recommended: reads on Windows, macOS and Android |
| FAT32 | 4 GB | Works, but most HD and 4K films are too big |
| NTFS | No practical limit | Not guaranteed on Android: reformat to exFAT |
To format as exFAT on Windows, right-click the drive in File Explorer, choose Format and pick exFAT. On a Mac, use Disk Utility, Erase, then ExFAT. Formatting erases the drive: copy your files off it first.
Play a USB drive in Lumenoir
- Plug the drive into the headset.
- In Lumenoir, choose Headset folder or USB drive.
- Select the drive, or one folder on it, in the system window that opens.
- Your videos appear with posters and resume. Lumenoir remembers the drive: it shows up again each time you plug it in.
Both Headset files and Headset folder or USB drive are free. ISO images and VIDEO_TS or BDMV folders of your own discs also open from the folder source; disc images are part of Premium.
Copy movies from a Windows PC
- Connect the headset to the PC with a USB-C cable that carries data. Some USB-C cables only charge.
- Put on the headset and select Allow to give the computer access to its files. If you miss the prompt, open the notifications (the bell icon).
- On the PC, the Meta Quest appears as a drive in File Explorer. Open its internal shared storage.
- Drag your films into the Movies folder. Leave the other folders alone: Meta warns that moving or deleting files in other folders can stop the headset from working properly.
- Unplug the cable, put the headset on and open the film in your player. In Lumenoir, it appears under Headset files.
Meta suggests a USB 3.0 cable on a USB 3.0 port for faster copies. A 50 GB 4K film still takes a while: start it before dinner.
Copy from a Mac or a Chromebook
A Mac does not show the Meta Quest in Finder on its own. Meta's instructions are to install Android File Transfer, connect the cable, select Allow in the headset, then drag files into the headset window.
On a Chromebook, the headset appears in the Files app after you select Allow. Copy into Movies the same way.
Where to put the files
Use Movies or Download in the headset's storage: Lumenoir lists the videos stored there under Headset files after you allow access. Subfolders are fine.
Android's media library does not index ISO images or DVD .vob files, so they never appear under Headset files. Open their folder with Headset folder or USB drive instead.
When it does not work
- The computer does not see the headset: try another cable (a data cable), another port, and check the Allow prompt in the headset's notifications.
- The drive does not appear: unplug it and plug it back, try another adapter, and reformat it as exFAT.
- A large film refuses to copy to the drive: the drive is probably FAT32, which stops at 4 GB.
- Search in Meta's Files app finds nothing on the drive: Meta's search does not cover USB drives. Browse the folders instead.

Questions
Can you plug a USB drive into a Meta Quest 3?
Yes. Meta's Files app lists USB drives as soon as they are connected, and video players such as Lumenoir can play from them. Use a USB-C drive or a USB-C adapter.
What format should a USB drive be for a Meta Quest 3?
exFAT. FAT32 also reads, but it cannot store files larger than 4 GB, which rules out most HD and 4K films.
How do I transfer movies from my PC to a Meta Quest 3?
Connect a data USB-C cable, select Allow in the headset, open the Meta Quest in File Explorer and drag the films into the Movies folder of its internal shared storage.
How do I copy videos to a Meta Quest from a Mac?
Install Android File Transfer, connect the cable, select Allow in the headset, then drag the videos into the Movies folder in the Android File Transfer window.
Can I use an external hard drive with a Meta Quest?
A portable SSD is the safer choice. A spinning hard disk needs more power than the headset's port may give it, and it drains the battery faster.
Where do I put movies on my Meta Quest?
In the Movies folder (or Download) of the headset's internal shared storage. Video players list them from there.
Can I charge the Meta Quest while a USB drive is plugged in?
Not with the drive alone: the headset has one USB-C port. Charge first, or plan shorter sessions.
