Plex on Meta Quest: what actually works

There is no official Plex app for Meta Quest 3, 3S or 2, and Plex has not announced one. You can still watch your Plex library in the headset in three ways: the Plex web app in the Meta Quest Browser, the Android Plex app sideloaded as a flat window, or a VR player that signs in to Plex. Lumenoir does the last one for free: you link it with a code at plex.tv/link and your libraries open in a cinema.

Is there a Plex app for Meta Quest?

No. Plex has not published an app on the Meta Horizon Store (checked October 2026). Owners have asked for one on Plex's forums since 2019. In an April 2026 thread there, a reply says there are "no current plans for a VR/AR app" and points to third-party apps built on the Plex API. Movie Deck for Plex is one, a paid app on the Store; Lumenoir is another.

So the question is not how to install Plex, but which client reaches your Plex Media Server best from inside the headset.

The Plex web app in the browser

Open the Meta Quest Browser, go to app.plex.tv and sign in. You get your whole library, with posters, watched status and resume. It is the quickest test, and it costs nothing.

The limits come from the browser. The film plays in a flat window, not on a cinema screen, and side-by-side 3D stays side by side. A browser also cannot decode some audio formats common on Blu-ray rips, such as DTS and TrueHD, so your Plex server often has to convert the sound, or the whole file, while you watch.

Sideloading the Android Plex app

The Meta Quest runs Android apps, and Plex distributes an Android app. Sideloading it means enabling developer mode on your Meta account and installing the APK from a computer. A Meta Quest 3 owner reported on Plex's forum that the 64-bit APK runs well, but shows as a phone app in portrait mode, with no obvious way to turn it to landscape.

It works for browsing and for 2D films, but you are watching a phone screen floating in your room: no theater, no 3D. Sideloaded apps also receive no updates through the Store.

Plex Media Server as a DLNA server

Plex Media Server can also publish your media over DLNA. Any VR player with a DLNA client can then browse it, but only as folders: you lose Plex's collections and watched status, and resume depends on the player. It is a fallback when your player has no Plex sign-in. In Lumenoir, DLNA is a Premium source, while the direct Plex sign-in is free.

Watch Plex in Lumenoir, step by step

  1. Open Lumenoir and choose Plex on the home screen. The window Sign in to Plex shows a code.
  2. On your phone or computer, open plex.tv/link and enter the code. The headset signs in by itself.
  3. Your servers appear, with your libraries, Collections, Playlists and Continue watching.
  4. Pick a film and press Play or Resume. It opens on the cinema screen, with its audio tracks and subtitles.
  5. At home, set Quality to Original, always to make sure the file is never converted.

Tested on a Meta Quest 2 against a Plex Media Server on the same home network. Watching from outside your home has not been tested yet.

Original quality, and when Plex converts

Lumenoir asks the server for the original file and decodes it in the headset. The player tells you what is happening: Original quality, Original video · converted audio, or Converted by the server. Conversion only happens when your network is too slow or the headset cannot decode a format.

For 4K files with a very high bitrate (over 80 Mb/s), use 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi near the router. Plex's own rules also apply: on your home network, playing your own videos is free; from outside it, Plex requires a Plex Pass (yours or the server owner's) or a Remote Watch Pass, and Plex said in 2025 that third-party apps would follow these rules in 2026.

Limits to know

  • 3D and VR files from Plex play in 3D in Lumenoir: free for 20 minutes a day, then Premium. See 3D movies on Meta Quest.
  • Plex's Watch Together is not available: Plex offers no public API for it, and Lumenoir has no shared viewing.
  • If your films are in plain folders rather than in Plex, read NAS and PC videos on Meta Quest.

Questions

Is there a Plex app for Meta Quest 3?

No official one. Plex has not released a Meta Quest app, and a reply on Plex's forum in April 2026 said there were no current plans for VR. Third-party VR players that sign in to Plex fill the gap.

Can I sideload Plex on a Meta Quest 3?

Yes, with developer mode and a computer. Users report the Android app runs, but as a phone-style portrait window, without 3D or a cinema screen.

How do I watch Plex in VR?

Use a VR player with a Plex sign-in. In Lumenoir, choose Plex, enter the code at plex.tv/link, then play any film from your libraries on a cinema screen.

Is Plex free on Meta Quest?

In Lumenoir, the Plex source is free, in original quality. On Plex's side, streaming on your home network is free, while remote streaming requires a Plex Pass or a Remote Watch Pass.

Can I watch 3D movies from Plex on a Meta Quest?

Yes, if the file is side-by-side or over-under 3D. Lumenoir detects it and sends one picture to each eye. The Plex web app in the browser cannot do this.

Does Plex work on Meta Quest 3S and Meta Quest 2?

The same options apply to Meta Quest 2, 3 and 3S. Lumenoir was tested with Plex on a Meta Quest 2.

Can I use Jellyfin instead of Plex?

Yes. Lumenoir finds Jellyfin servers on your network and signs in with a Quick Connect code or a password. Jellyfin is free in Lumenoir too.
