Comparison

Video players for Meta Quest, compared: which one for which need

There is no single best video player for Meta Quest 3: the right one depends on what you watch and where your files are. For 3D Blu-ray (MVC), 4XVR Premium is the one with documented support; for watching with friends, Bigscreen Beta; for online VR content, DeoVR. For Plex, Jellyfin or a NAS without a subscription, several apps qualify, including Lumenoir, which is not released yet.

Which player for which need

  • 3D Blu-ray (MVC): 4XVR with its Premium add-on is the only player here that documents MVC decoding (Blu-ray 3D ISO, SSIF, m2ts and more). Skybox's preview reads 2D Blu-ray ISO with menus but not 3D ISO. Lumenoir does not decode MVC.
  • Watching together: Bigscreen Beta, with rooms up to 30 people and an account. Skybox has Rooms in its 2.0 preview (Meta Avatar needed, 5 people in the cinema scene).
  • Online VR content: DeoVR, a streaming platform with a creator and studio catalogue. Local playback is a side feature there.
  • Plex, Jellyfin or a NAS, no subscription: several apps do it with a one-time price or for free. 4XVR (Plex, Jellyfin, Emby and network shares; USB and shares need Premium), Movie Deck for Plex (Plex), Finally VR (Plex, SMB, DLNA, WebDAV), Skybox (SMB and DLNA; Plex and Jellyfin in preview) and Lumenoir (Plex and Jellyfin free, NAS over SMB with Premium). See Plex on Meta Quest and NAS on Meta Quest.
  • Theaters and ambient light: Moon documents a MAX theater, several scenes (some paid) and light from the film cast into the room. Skybox has five scenes, including Ultra Cinema.
  • Fisheye footage with lens correction: HereSphere documents lens and stereo correction for fisheye and equirectangular video.
  • iPhone spatial video (MV-HEVC): 4XVR Premium (1080p 8-bit), Skybox preview, Lumenoir, and Meta's own Gallery app. See 3D movies on Meta Quest.
  • Lowest up-front price among paid apps here: Pigasus at 6.99 EUR. Check its audio limits first if your files use DTS or TrueHD.

Free tiers differ. In Lumenoir, 3D, VR180, 360, the large-format theater, 7.1 sound and ambient light are free for 20 minutes a day, and NAS shares need Premium. In 4XVR, USB, network shares and MVC need Premium. Details of Lumenoir's tiers are on the Premium section.

Where Lumenoir fits, and where it does not

Lumenoir is a local player: it plays files on the headset, on a USB drive, on Plex and Jellyfin servers, and, with Premium, on SMB network shares. It has no account and no ads. It places the film in modeled theaters with 7.1 binaural sound and light from the film on the walls. You can try the theater in your browser on the home page.

Other players do things Lumenoir does not. 4XVR decodes 3D Blu-ray (MVC) and supports Emby and cloud drives. Bigscreen and Skybox's preview let you watch with other people. Skybox and Moon have PC streaming apps. DeoVR has an online catalogue. Skybox and Moon have thousands of store ratings; Lumenoir has none yet.

Lumenoir's feature list also names other server protocols. We will add them to this comparison once they are checked on real servers.

Streaming apps and Meta's own apps

If you want Netflix-style streaming rather than your own files, these players are not the answer. Meta's Horizon TV hub, announced in September 2025, groups Prime Video, Peacock, Twitch, Hulu, ESPN and Disney+ (US, from December 2025), with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. It does not document local or NAS playback.

Meta's Files app manages internal storage, USB drives, SD cards and Google Drive (read-only) and can hand a file to another app. Meta's help pages do not document a VR video player, 3D modes or network shares in it. The Gallery app shows photos, videos and spatial videos captured or synced to the headset.

We found no official Plex app for Meta Quest on 22 October 2026. The Plex VR store page is the old Gear VR and Oculus Go app, wishlist only. More in Plex on Meta Quest and how to watch movies on Meta Quest.

  • Fluid Browser + Video Player: early access, 17.99 EUR on the French store, 4.5 / 5 (1,149 ratings). A browser that plays local video files with light effects; multiplayer rooms.
  • PLAY'A Video Player: free, 2.9 / 5 (621 ratings). Local, SMB, DLNA and web sources; no USB in a 2026 test.
  • Virtual Desktop streams a Windows PC to the headset. It is not a media library player, so it is not in the table.

How this page was made, and its sources

Facts were collected on 22 October 2026 from each app's Meta store page, the developer's site, FAQ or forum, the trackers vrdb.app and queststoredb.com, and one hands-on review (vrpupu.com, September 2026). User reviews and forum posts are not used as proof of a feature or a defect. Anything we could not source is left out or marked not documented.

Lumenoir facts come from its own feature list and are not yet confirmed by users. We re-check prices, ratings and preview channels when this page is updated.

Questions

What is the best video player for Meta Quest 3?

It depends on your files. For 3D Blu-ray (MVC), 4XVR Premium documents support. For watching with friends, Bigscreen Beta. For online VR content, DeoVR. For Plex, Jellyfin or a NAS with no subscription, 4XVR, Skybox (Plex and Jellyfin in preview), Movie Deck for Plex, Finally VR and Lumenoir (not released yet) all qualify.

What is the best free VR video player for Meta Quest?

Free options include 4XVR (base app; USB and network shares need Premium), Bigscreen Beta (account required), DeoVR (base app), Finally VR Video Player and, once released, Lumenoir (headset files, USB, Plex and Jellyfin free; 3D and VR 20 minutes a day). Check what each free tier includes before you choose.

4XVR vs Skybox: which one should I pick?

On 22 October 2026, 4XVR is a free app with a 29.99 EUR one-time Premium that unlocks MVC 3D Blu-ray, USB and network sources. Skybox costs 9.99 EUR and includes SMB, DLNA, USB and AirScreen PC streaming; Plex and Jellyfin are in its opt-in preview. Pick 4XVR for 3D Blu-ray, Skybox for PC streaming or YouTube.

Is there an official Plex app for Meta Quest 3?

We found none on 22 October 2026. The Plex VR store page is the old Gear VR and Oculus Go app, wishlist only. Third-party players connect to Plex instead. See Plex on Meta Quest.

Which player plays 3D Blu-ray on a Meta Quest?

4XVR with its Premium add-on documents MVC decoding for Blu-ray 3D ISO, SSIF, m2ts and other files. Skybox's preview reads 2D Blu-ray ISO but not 3D ISO. Lumenoir does not decode MVC.

Do any Meta Quest video players need a subscription?

Among the players compared here, only DeoVR Premium is a subscription (14.99 USD a month, 83.88 USD a year, or 149.99 USD lifetime). The others are free, paid once, or offer one-time upgrades.

Can a Meta Quest play videos without installing a player?

Meta's Gallery app shows videos and spatial videos captured or synced to the headset, and the Files app can open files in other apps. Meta's help pages do not document 3D modes or network shares in them, which is why most people add a player.

Is Lumenoir available?

Not yet. It is coming soon to the Meta Horizon Store, so it has no rating or reviews. You can try its theater in your browser on the home page.
